Road to Oscar 2013 – Best Picture – Beasts of the Southern Wild

Beasts of the Southern Wild is an American film directed by Benh Zeitlin.  It initially screened at Sundance Film Festival and followed with competition at Cannes along with other festivals before going into limited release in New York and Los Angeles on June 27, 2012.  Beasts stars Quvenzhané Wallis, Dwight Henry and Levy Easterly.  It is nominated for four Oscars including Best Director and Best Performance for an Actress in a Leading Role (Wallis).  At 9 years old Wallis is the youngest nominee for the Academy Award for Best Actress.  The film won multiple awards at Sundance (Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic and Dramatic Excellence in Cinematography) and Cannes (Caméra d’Or, FIPRESCI Prize, Prix Regards Jeune, Prize of the Ecumenical Jury).
